This years Wirral Regatta Series was blessed with one of
the best summers we have had for some time. The series is organised
by the clubs on the Wirral and the events are run on the river Mersey
and the river Dee. The events are open to a wide variety of classes
of yachts from dinghys and Mersey Falcons to Stars, Hilbres
and other classics up to larger and more modern types like the Sigma
33.. Entrys in every class except dinghies were up this year
and around 250 + yachts took part. Over all this equated to over
2000 people starting in the various events. However for our club
the dinghies are of the main interest. We could not have wished
for better weather and we had glorious sunshine for nearly every
event. The wind however varied from a windless drift
for the Wallasey clubs event to a calm first lap then a 180 degree
shift and a 4 to 5 blow that resulted in a knock down for one of
the larger yachts but a fantastic wild bobsleigh ride type reach
for the dinghies, very exciting. At the West Kirby event we had
glorious sunshine but a light breeze and then ended with a perfect
day at the Dee clubs event, plenty of breeze a nice chop on the
water and once again sun, sun, sun.
After all this excitement I am pleased to report that our members
finished the series with some very creditable results. John Ainsworth
finished second overall with Ken Moran a few hundred yards astern
in third place and Brian Taylor and Cara Balshaw in sixth place
and with only one event entered Keith Ainsworth and Gina Kelly finished
in twenty third position.
These are excellent results for our club especially as we are
sailing on unfamiliar waters and in a range of conditions very different
from our own.
All our members who took part thoroughly enjoyed every event and
we hope that we can encourage more of our members to join us next
year.
All these events are listed on our racing schedule so come on Weaver
members, make the effort and have a go, we know that you will enjoy
yourselves.
